Skinnydipping=Go for Nothingness= QR Experience

I spent about 6-8 days immersed in my readings for the lit review I am trying to do on "Teaching Presence". I guess I was up to the challenge due to an honest comment from a dude at WizIQ. So I tasked myself to search for more recent studies. I dared email Dr Garrison and Dr Aykol of the COI framework, so more readings to do from then on.

At one point, a co teacher of mine labelled me as autistic=fixated and glued to my computer and reading for days, with headphones on repeatedly listening to U2's "BAD" or Yoav's "Where is my Mind?", and secretly wishing to have a lollipop in between breaks. I'd postpone eating lunch until I've done good work. At certain points, I'd stop and talk aloud to myself. I was close to saturation points when finally my colleague cum mentor Dr. PG of the Faculty of Management and Development Studies reviewed my proposal and listened to what I wanted to do for this study with online teachers at WizIQ. Just in time when my brain was exhausted with all the reads.

Dr. PG, in his usual cool polo top, started by saying..."So you are a member of WizIQ..." and out came my narrative of a summer-filled WizIQ experiments, viewing a few recorded classes, engaging in 2-3 classes, and learning more about online teaching through the WizIQ community. Then I calmed down to finally listen, a good sign of maturity on my part as it is quite hard for me to let go of a research stance I was trying to build up these past few days. But what he was saying made so much sense to me. I got overwhelmed with the task I am about to face of transcribing data and coding all these based on audio-video-text. Then I recalled that once I wanted to do some ethnographic study of expert teachers in progressive schools to simply learn from their best teaching practices. That has taken a different form now with this current study I am about to undertake.

Thanks to Doctor X, now I have a more focused study, with research questions which seem to cap what I want to do, but from a perspective of 'teaching presence' as socially constructed--a product of interactions which the data itself will speak of and I as researcher shall try to interpret.

This is like ooooooh, a light bulb moment=tadaaa!
So what has been happening to me all this time was this:
-my usual excited self with my sandbox play tools=can't wait to get hold of the data and play with it
-all geared up with my snorkling gear, board shorts and wet suit top=equipped with several concepts to look at my data as I did do my HW of lit review

Then here is qualitative research dive instructor telling me to simply
go naked=go for nothingness.

After my session with Doctor X, I gave my brain time to settle and rest to reflect on my evolving practice of quali research. For this study, that was all I needed....a
pair of goggles, nothing else and simply dive into the waters with my naked body--so my senses are free to immerse in the experience of observing and gathering data to arrive at things I am still uncertain of. I have to let the teaching-learning interactions unfold right before my eyes, transcribe and codify all these to come out of the water, with something new to contribute to research.

You see, my past research were 'safe'. I simply had to reinforce what the literature has already said. The data was available in my classrooms and program/school experiments, virtual communities or my current experiences...then I search for the existing theory behind all these. For who am I even, to propose a theory or why even if there is something else around I can latch on. There is fun, comfort and safety in that. Or maybe I just needed all these to get over my self doubts, before I start taking risks and assure myself that yes, I am capable of taking myself seriously, trod and persevere on this path of learning qualitative research--real time.

I have to remind myself that qualitative research=QR say differently---it's a constant search for meaning from the data available which in fact can be interpreted by using another pair of lens. It took a WizIQ for this pursuit to take place which has eventually led me to this--a concrete experience of what I've been trying to learn from the books since last year when I took EDDE 206 Research in Distance Education.

Finally, I arrive and boy, I will dare skinny dip, keep my goggles on and maybe even lose it to find an ordinary stone or creature of a research finding. Now whether it is a precious find or an entirely endemic specimen with no name, I can only learn with emptiness, patience, and perseverance.

Gaahhhhd, pretty scary and exciting! Now, I truly deserve my beach break...too bad, summer's over and the clouds look dreary.

E-Response from Donn Randy Garrison and Zehra Aykol of COI

This one is pretty major....

From DRG

Aleta,
I cannot recall studies using TP and the CoI in synchronous live classes but would encourage you to do such a study. The CoI framework should apply well to such contexts.
I have copied this to a colleague of mine who may have knowledge of such a study.
Best wishes,
DRG

From ZAykol

Dear Aleta,

I know one study that may help you. It is a qualitative study, the authors asked students what makes some online instructors good and then they used the CoI framework to interpret the results.

Aleta,
I am impressed with your professional approach to this. Every previous inquiery of this nature was remarkably superficial and of questionable value. It will be my pleasure to assist you in any way you wish.

Please consider using skype (screen sharing) for a preliminary discussion. This would allow us to quickly view the full breadth of activities I have innitiated since getting involved at WizIQ. A primer and outline of my exodus can be found here:

Hello
Prof J.Aleta
Mr. Kalyan at wiziq did tell me a little about your research and I would be glad to be of any help If I can.
Of late I have not been able to have any live classes as my job responsibilities have changed over the last couple of months and I am doing online teaching but some how have not been able to give live free classes as I did before. For your research if you require feel free to watch the recordings of any of my previous classes and I would be happy to help in any way that I can
hope to hear from you soon

Dear Aleta,

Pleasant day! I was busy in the child literacy program for the underprivileged for the past ten days so, I was not able to reply. I permit you to view my recorded sessions. Since i'm engaged in the private classes those recordings cannot be viewed. I shall ask wiziq to help you in this aspect. Any favour from my end i'll be pleased to do as a scholar of ELT.

warm regards,

In Awe of Beauty

And so I look at the opposite pole where this Bengali friend is and I look at where I am, rethinking my position of the existence of God.

At this age, I've relaxed myself from trying to follow a routine of reading the Bible and cooking up fervent prayers with fellow Christians to reach the high heavens. Take away all the prophets, holy books, the rituals handed down, religious artifacts and places of worship, in short all the cultural and traditional trimmings of religion, I try to simplify my basic beliefs. I am left with what I have which are pure thoughts born out of moments when I am in a state of AWE with life's beauty--as seen through:
-fiery sunsets
-endless water falling
-women in saris
-Rodin's 'Hands"
-the tallest of trees
-tools of technology
-my daughter's assuring hands
-the color blue on a man's dark tan
-research pursuits
-warmth in online connections
-good reads
-my son's sense of humor
-a neat pattern of wrist hair
-a best friend's advice
-grrreat sex
-a Rajasthan dream
-a neatly written blog
-a well spent beach break

The list goes on....

Beauty in simple things falling into place and seeing the connectedness of my life's events make me wonder that perhaps there is a greater being beyond me--a grand designer or artist unfolding neat surprises right before me despite my impatience, irritability, and negativity. For now, it's only the idea of God which seems to best explain it.
Now whether God has/is:
-human like features/characteristics, or
-some kind of energy, matter or force, or
-some spirit in the high heavens which may abide in us all or
-a burning bush; or
-different avatars
-a babe in a manger
-ohmmmm
-me= myself= I

...is really for any believer to decide.
All I know is God makes me wonder, look up, say a little prayer of thanks and embrace these surprises which come my way and try to be the best human being I can become, accept my flaws and limitations and do what I can to help others see and believe the life can be good if seen through such simple but glorious moments.

Perhaps an aetheist would not even entertain such thoughts and instead, make productive use of his time elsewhere to toil on the land, gather food and build a fire, whilst I a believer of God, would do the same but cook up a poem or two to make for healthy exchange over a cozy fire while roasting marshmallows with a dude.

Such differences make good stuff + everything else for chatting, virtual or otherwise.

Online Teaching: Questions

Here's one:

How can UPOU better prepare affiliate faculty members and newly hired fulltime faculty to effectively teach online--using both asynchronous and synchronous learning networks?

This study will require:
-a historical review of faculty trainings/workshops; faculty support systems which look into faculty needs to help them teach better
-a profile of current affiliate facs
-needs assessment
-a look into frameworks of teacher preparedness to do online teaching
-arguments for strengths of blended learning in undergraduate programs and professional development/ in service training to provide justification why we need to prepare fac members to do synchronous and asynchronous, to include use of a variety of platforms
-other surrounding factors or areas to look into when it comes to preparing teachers to teach online--including perceptions of online teaching and learning--and how these can be factored into the design of in service faculty development to improve online teaching

This study shall feed into:
How we can prepare BES teachers to teach online--using both asynchronous and synchronous teaching
How we can prepare other prospective teachers to teach in virtual classrooms using a variety of tools (Future Virtual High School teachers)

Other thoughts:
-mounting the curr for VHS is plausible, feasible due to availability of online tools--BUT, the big BUT--where do you get good teachers to teach it? how to design and improve pre service education of prospective online teachers?

WHY IS MY STUDY ON TEACHING PRESENCE at WIZIQ a STEP in the RIGHT DIRECTION?

This study looks into TEACHING PRESENCE= design and organization, facilitating discourse, direct instruction. Most faculty development activities at UPOU delve on design and organization of instruction, not much into direct facilitation as our main platform such as MOODLE greatly operate on this need. However, running synchronous classes could be one area we yet to explore especially with the upcoming implementation of BES for our undergraduates.

What is sorely overlooked is (social presence hence my earlier paper on sense of community) and facilitation + direct instruction. We need to significantly examine these areas if we are to prepare undergraduates to become online teachers. Using MOODLE alone can be limited and limiting. Using live classes may be an area of strength we have yet to explore if we mean to model good teaching to our students.

This study will look into other indicators of Teaching Presence in SLN which may not be surfaced in prior studies of teaching presence which are largely aligned with ALN.

For selfish reasons, this study will precisely take me there because in the end, I would want myself as a professor and my future students to have an enriching and meaningful experience in online teaching and learning so they themselves will become better teachers.

For UPOU, this study on Teacher Presence & WizIQ can present better tools and ways to make online teaching and learning happen.

For the bigger research community, I honestly do not know and perhaps do not care, yet! I mean, it's the least of my worries to satisfy the standards of what scholars deem to be worthy of research...or should I? Hmmm...how then?

A Response From WizIQ

Finally, a response from WizIQ folks....
I think I need to find out the basis for the list of 5 students recommended by the Academic Advisor. Then I need to read about data sampling. More importantly, I need to decide whether to go for a case study or an autoethnography.

Post Modern AutoEthno?

Finally, real feedback for my first ever auto ethno, the paper I presented at Pune, India. Colleague Jovy Zarate finally spent some time to read my paper and relay to me comments and recommendations. She sensed some hesitation on my part to go full blown post modern auto ethno. She advised that I continue working on this paper by maximizing my 'field notes' (blog entries + email exchanges). She also said somethingie about subject positioning. Ooooh, I never thought there was such a thing! But yes there is! I need to strengthen that part of the paper since I already managed to surface traces of this by drawing from my prior experiences of community dev work, classroom teaching and curriculum studies. She needs to see a more solid connection among these and how these impact on my evolving views and actions of student support.

There's Always a First Time

It's been a month of preparation for UPOU's graduation ceremony 2011. This time, I'm chair of the cultural committee, tasked to oversee the Tribute to the Graduates.
Of course, what motivated me the most was the UPOU Band which for the first time played when I was co-chair with a good friend and co-fac Diego Maranan year 2009.

So after a few weeks, I thought the stressful part was over. Then, a just a few days ago, the greatest challenge came to me by surprise....I 4GOT that I had to write the speech for Chancey...gahhhhd! And the shameful part was I kinda felt some disappointment when I went straight to Chancey to inquire whether she read my email. Apparently she had asked somebody else to do it for me as she had been waiting for 2 weeks for me to come up with the speech. After clarifying matters, I was still tasked to come up with the written speech, based on a 10-15 minute interview with her.

I decided to have the speech revolve around the concept of the Oblation---UP's symbol--which leaves its mark on every UP grad. Chancey Grace Javier Alfonso and National Artist Napoleon Abueva officially permitted by the Unive to sculpt the Oblation. Methinks I did well here. Thanks to Chancey, Mam Teret and Primo.

Chancellor Grace Alfonso’s Inspirational Message
Tribute to Graduates, May 6, 2011

Tulad ninyo, ako man ay minsang isang estudyante ng UP.

Naiiba kayo. Tunay na kakaiba.....
dahil UP na nga,

WizIQ Paper Committment

Starting ideas here....
Thanks to Bryan and Kalyan for letting me know about WizIQ :)

Letter to WizIQ

I hope you are well and in good cheer.

I am a faculty member of the University of the Philippines Open Univesity and was in the recent SCDL Conference at Pune last February 2011. I chanced upon your presentation on Mobile Learning and WizIQ. Since then, and through the efforts and patience of your Support Team, I have been an active member at WizIQ learning community and now a registered Premium Teacher. I am learning tons through my recent experiences of running small private classes with gradeschoolers and program orientation sessions with my undergraduate students of the University of the Philippines Open University. Over and above this, I am able to build networks with equally lifelong learners and teachers at WizIQ.

In this regard, I am writing to seek permission to do a study of a small number of online teachers running Language/ESL classes at WizIQ. The planned study aims to:

-describe the nature of teacher presence of 5 well recommended teachers at WiziQ
-examine how online teachers skillfully use the multiple modes made available
by the virtual classroom
-describe compensatory strategies employed by teachers while engaged in teaching
and facilitation

The study shall be grounded on reflective practice and Anderson's community of inquiry framework. The community of learning established at WizIQ lends itself naturally for teachers to learn from each other through simple exchange of ideas and sharing of online teaching experiences and practices. Hence, the study sits well with WiziQ having rich data made available to all types of online learners and teachers. The planned study shall be qualitative in nature and involve my participation in live online classes as well as viewing/observing recorded classes. I may also have to conduct online interviews with these expert/well recommended teachers at WizIQ. Should time permit, I intend to present results of this study at the upcoming AAOU Conference organized by Wawasan University come September 2011 (25th AAOU Conference Penang).
